WoodNZ — Handmade Timber Furniture from Northland

WoodNZ is Paul Ewen's one-man workshop in Northland, New Zealand, turning locally sourced macrocarpa, swamp kauri, and totara into freeform mirrors, stools, and tables. Every piece is milled and finished by hand — no two are the same.

Much of the timber has a story of its own. The macrocarpa comes from trees grown as dairy shelter belts at Puhi Puhi, some over two metres through, milled on-site with an Alaskan chainsaw mill. The swamp kauri is recovered from Kaihu, near Dargaville — semi-submerged logs dug out and carried in by quad bike. Totara is sourced from a Puhi Puhi dairy farm, seeded from a neighbouring bush block and cleared from the pasture as it grows.

Each piece is built without nails or screws, then finished with Californian orange oil and sealed with teak wax — letting the natural grain, burrs, and edges of the timber do the talking.
